He wrote the movie The Inkwell in 1994 and the TV movies Cosmic Slop, The Tuskegee Airmen, and Good Fences. Ellis won an American Book Award for Right Here, Right Now. He won a CableACE Award in 1995 for Cosmic Slop and was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in 1996 for The Tuskegee Airmen. Ellis is known for his small piece titled New Black Aesthetic (NBA) and for coining the phrase “cultural mulatto”. In 1991 Ellis was the subject of a PBS documentary called A Moveable Feast.
