He joined the family banking firm N M Rothschild & Sons in 1987 and became chief executive of Rothschild Asset Management in 1990. James Rothschild became Chairman of the firm in 1993 and enjoyed farming as well as being an amateur pilot. He graduated from City University in London in 1976 and worked in journalism as the circulation manager of the magazine The New Review. James Rothschild passed away on July 8, 1996 at 41 years old when he was found hanged at a hotel after a meeting discussing plans for a merger of asset management companies. One of his children, James Amschel Victor Rothschild, is married to heiress/socialite Nicky Hilton.
